When starting off, i'd suggest just using the stock brushes. A lot of people who come into PS keep using custom brushes and it becomes a crutch for them.

And when doing a border, a lot of the time, no border is the best way to go.

Overall, a decent attempt. Practice makes perfect so kiu.

To add to what rek posted, I recommend using stock fonts as well. Why? Simple fonts can provide more advance results compared to fancier ones. You might want to look up some text tutorials to get a better understanding and ultimately develop your own style. :3
