Horror Games

Post by satman83 »

Well a yesterday i was talking to RuYi and we got onto the subject of horror games.
Which ones make us jump, which we would never play in the dark and which we
just love to play.

For me its Doom 3 and Quake 4, i cant play those games in the dark...lol scares
the crap out of me :P and to tell the truth i hate playing them when am all alone.

But on the other hand i love RE4 and RE series in general, scary too but just
good as well.

So whats your favorite horror game? which one do you play in the dark or dont
play in the dark? and which game makes you jump?

I'm a Silent Hill maniac. Any part of it is good. Tbh, I don't like shooters where everything is.. silent, then all of a sudden you get a heart attack.

I played entire Doom 3 without lights, with a headphone, after 12 in the night home alone lol

Somewhere in the beginning of the game there is this monster that jumps trough the stairs as you walk on them and I screamed REALLY HARD and backed off from the monitor in one motion, throwing my headphones on the floor and turning on the light :P

And there was this part in FEAR (1) where you climb up some stairs to a ventilation shaft, and the moment your head enters the vent shaft this girls is RIGHT IN YOUR FACE and it scared the sh*t outta me lol

Favourite horror game would have to be Silent hill 1 / 2 though, but that's more tense than plain scary most of the time.

^ Bella Sisters, they scared the hell out of me when I first jumped in the pit -.-; xD

Scariest is anything Silent Hill for me. You don't have an arsenal of weapons to just shoot the crap out of everything. Things are often not explained and you are left with your imagination to wonder and there are wtf monsters. Hell is win.

Heheh, true that.

well thats why...it FAILED on the PC, god it didnt even have mouse support...and
am NOT kidding. They added it in a later patch but seriously? a shooting game
with no mouse support..lol :P

Best versions of RE4 would be Wii > Gamecube/PS2 (only because the PS2 version
as more extras then the gamecube one, but the gamecube one looks better so its
a tie 8) )

When I was younger I'd always play games at a friends house, and at that time it was Quake and Doom that were the scary games for me. Later, when I got more into videogames, I never bothered to replay them, and the only horrorgames I played were the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games.

Although both had me scared a bunch of times, I always thought the SH games were scarier. The story, atmosphere, and the the evil was more symbolic. I love Resident Evil, don't get me wrong, but its characters were trained people that knew what to do in situations like this. The creatures behaviour could be explained by the viruses and what not - in SH it was always so much more psychological and symbolic, and the fact I couldn't always explain what was going on and why made it more scary than the RE games. Besides that the characters were just average people without training that suddenly found themselves into that place (after receiving a letter from their dead wife what turf.)

Even so, if I had to pick one level that had me terrified from start until the end, it's the Shalebridge Cradle level in the stealth game Thief: Deadly Shadows.
That level is absolutely brilliant, it has everything a good horror level needs IMHO.

There were moments where I sat in dark corners and not daring to go further (I hid in a fireplace for over 10 minutes), and moments I really screamed in fear. The level is brilliant in every way. It doesn't need hordes of zombies and other creatures to scare you - I was scared even when there wasn't anything going on. The noises you hear, from squeaky doors to the cries of a baby, it won't fail to send chills down your spine and it won't give you a second of rest, nor the illusion of being safe. In the Shalebridge Cradle, you are always on your guard.

Garrett, the character, isn't a trained agent like in RE. He doesn't have the strength, nor the equipment to fight off hordes of monsters - it's best to avoid them. You feel vulnerable all the time, which makes it even more scary.

When I entered the building, I hated the darkness, I hated how I couldn't see anything or anyone until it was probably too late. Later, I stumbled upon a generator, and I was so happy. With a mechanical scream it started working and turned on the electric lamps, light I longed for so badly. And right then, I hated the light, and I would have done everything to make it go away, for now I could be easily seen by whatever remained there.

I thought to my self several times "I need to get out of here as soon as possible." When I did leave the Shalebridge eventually, I had explored every inch of it.
I think if a game or a level, designed to scare you, designed to make you hate it, achieves that, it has succeeded in it's every purpose.

OMG long post what turf.

The shed freak scare was nothing compared to the Shalebridge Cradle.

I forgot to mention I really got something against whatever wields a chainsaw.
The Chainsaw Freak in RE5 wasn't all that tough, but whenever he popped his baggy head up I'd make a run for it and let my co-op friend deal with him. When I played solo I pretty much turned the area into a mine field to make sure he'd be dead before he invaded my personal space. >>

I let my co-op partner deal with him, I kept my distance and dealt with the other Majini. Second time I had to meet him I brought a whole lot of mines. I made a whole trail of them kekekeke.

Can't help RE5 being stuck in my head.
Hmm.. Resident Evil 4.. Chainsaw Guy...
Can't remember all correctly, but I'm pretty sure that right after I saw him, my interest for the attaché case increased greatly.

lol...well i ran to the house on the right of town, the one with the padlocked
bedroom, i normally broad up the door to the out side and hold of their, even if
they smash the door up they still have to get past the book case and if that
goes then its into the padlocked room and shoot anything that opens the door :D

RE4 is one of those games that I rather watching people play than playing it myself. :P
