What happens when you become a murderer (red name)? Like any penalties?

Your chance to drop items when you die(except your equipped weapon) increases. You also lose some exp and sp.

AFAIK by my experiences you lose 5% exp each death and 60 sp per death IF you die in town or by a mob. Now with a person killing you its like 1.5% exp and 20 sp per death.
