Like Belgarath and Crumpets mentioned, nowadays the rule violating signatures are more common. Just one single question to the Moderators: are you enforcing this rule at the moment, or are you going to? Do you want us to PM the names of 'rule violators'?
I'd like to do anything to help this forums get easier to read.
An answer to these questions would be great

We think alike, nothing pisses me off more than having to scroll to a next post because of someone's clearly obese sig.

Thanks for reporting. The mod team will go through the list and PM those who have signatures with inappropriate sizes.
However, I want you to consider that even the rules state the signature must be 550x200 its hard to enforce it strictly. What I mean is, when I have a pic with 200px height and few lines of text and maybe another little userbar or something, that makes the dimension of the signature "box" add up to, say perhaps, 400px.
For example your signature, MrBow, is approximately 400px-500px in total with an image, few lines of text and the new ugly quote box (which is not your fault its ugly).
So, please understand that for this reason we won't be PMing everybody who's over the 200 height limit, but those that clearly cause others difficulty browsing the forums.
We again apologize
for not paying too much attention on sig size lately(since we've been busying with 3.0 and mod application and all that stuff). We'll definitely be looking out to those extreeemely long signatures and PMing them to replace it when a less page-stretching one.

Thanks for the quick and warm answer Millenium !
Ofcourse I know it's very hard to enforce this rule 100%, but there are some signatures that are just way too big (see the list of Belgarath). I'll edit my signature and remove the quote to give an example.

I have to agree with this. There are some sigs that are definitely annoying and don't allow me to surf the forum smoothly. Thanks for the nice answer and for taking it into account

Generally, if I see a signature that is WAY too big. I will PM them asking them to resize/remove it. Already PMed 2 people today, resized the Signature Image for one of those people myself.

Just an update for this.
Our friendly wizard, Ace, has made us a script that automatically checks the images in sigs when it gets uploaded. It doesn't work on existing signatures though.

I think that was an option in the control panel.
Nonetheless.
