Yesterday ( September 5th 2006 ) during the immense lag caused by too many people browsing the forums, I suggested in a post to instead of making 101 topics to actually use the chat room. Seemed good at the time till I enterd it, said hello and waited a full 5 minutes for it to appear.
Obviosuly that lag was caused by too mnay peopel on the forums. So I would like to suggest that someone who has experience with mIRC, goes and makes a SRF channel, so at times... maybe even forever we can access it.
If any1 has any Idea's hwo to make 1 perm, than hell ya !

The chat room has held upwards of 30 people before without significant lag. The only real use it gets is during inspections, after all. I think the lag you experienced the other day was part of the general strain on the site, presumably from Google's indexing spiders, which seems to finally have stopped. What was it, two weeks? Geez. First time Google touched something and it didn't turn to gold.

Rofl yeah I understand, maybe a temp solution for when servers go down, I mean its better than waiting 1 min for a topic to load, then realizing its the same as the other 40 you just happend to read before.. right...

I Actually think mIRC isn’t such a bad idea, and Ryoko should maybe even consider it. IRC has a large community, and is perfect for discussion.
If needed, I’m willing to help, been active on IRC 2 years or so.. even with scripting.

It has been considered in the past and Ryoko opted to stick with the flash chat, which may not be ideal, but is the best option that doesn't cost a lotta dough.

When I said "it has been considered" I meant both IRC specifically and the general question of a chat client.

When we discussed it back in the day, everything was fine.
But it seems like the MySQL can no longer support 100+ users on the site.
When he asked about chat in PM, I nudged him to post that in site dicussion so we can rehash it.
Problem being, the chat is mysql based. Every person in chat is an open MySQL connection. Every chat user accesses the database every 3 seconds to retrieve messages, and all messeges are stored for some period of time.
Getting off this chat platform would free up just that many resources.
So what are our option? I never dealt with MIRC. And when most people give me a link to an IRC chat, it doesnt work on my comp.
It would be nice to have a java chat or something.
Looking through the server config, it looks like there is a chat client installed and running. I just don't know how to use it.
I'll ask on TH.NET about that and see if anyone knows anything.

Logical_1 from TH.net has a decent Java based chat thing that you might consider. You should get with him and check it out - it might be an option for you.

You can use irc.starchat.net, ports 6667-6669,7000 channel sroforums.
There are some java chats that people can connect with as well, but they are crappy. Anyone who uses it frequently would use mIRC.
Either that or stick some google ads on here and rent a ventrilo server, or if there is a public one that we can use....such as
IP : vent.lonecoders.info
Port: 3784
For that server all you have to do is talk to an admin to get a channel.
I realize you need lower budget things, so an admin posted vent would do for the people.

I’d suggest using quakenet
if your gonna consider irc. It’s by far the largest network, fast and easy to connect to, and offers good services.
And general Mirc clients like the one on,
http://www.mirc.com (net?) should work fine though..

And at Quakenet they provide channel services named L and later on Q. You can request these services by for L having a minimum of 5 ppl in the channel for 4 hours. When the bot (so they call them) is requested, the channel will become permanently yours. In the L bot you can add users (moderators here etc) with different access levels. Q can be requested by having a minimum of 50 user for about 4 weeks.
Etc, this is a rough explanation, though when tou’re using irc, things will explain themselves. Anyway irc seems like a good alternative, since you can have 500+ users in your channel, and still be lagfree.
