Here's my dilemma:

I want to go buy a game, but I don't know which one to get. I'm not too fond of FPS on console, but with an xbox there's really no avoiding it.

I really really want to get mass effect, seeing that it's very deep and rpg'esque. But, i've been acquiring it through the internet for the past couple days and i'm at 60%, and I don't know if it would be worth just buying it. ADD TO THAT, it reminds me of JET FORCE GEMINI, the best N64 game made.

Gears of war looks great, but i'm not a fan of high action fps when I don't have a mouse and keyboard, but the thing that makes it attractive is that it's almost 1/2 the price of the other choices.

I played the original halo, it was the first game I got on my xbox. I enjoyed it and beat it a couple times, but when halo 2 came out I was DEEPLY disappointed and didn't ever think of buying the sequel. Last week when I went to buy ace combat 6, they had the special edition of halo 3 in the nice tin box and it got me thinking as to whether or not I should give it another chance. Keep in mind, i'm not a fanboy of the series and I won't enjoy it just because you think masterchief rox sox, and i'm not a fan of traditional action fps on a controller. As for multiplayer, I have xbox live but I don't like playing FPS online with a console.

Other - other suggestions.

This is what i'm looking for: An immersive experience (great story, characters, world), and with tons of gameplay, and i'm not talking about replayability (playing the game 500x over to unlock an award, I mean a long campaign/storyline that will take me a while to complete).

Vice City and San Andreas are so uber win, I'm thinking of downloading SA right now and owning it again (that would be the third time..)
I've never bought any of the GTA's, but I'll support them by encouraging you to buy it.

I have GTA IV (first game I bought), I downloaded BF:BC and it's a great game but I don't like pure FPS like that on console without a keyboard and mouse.

I ended up buying mass effect, played 4 hours straight without noticing. I really really like it, but I realize it's not for everyone. When I download MMOs i'm the kind of guy that will spend hours reading strategies, builds, and learning the game mechanics while it downloads. I love theorycraft, and because i'm into that sort of thing, mass effect is really appealing to me. It's really sterile because of it's semi-non-linearity, sort of like eve online, but I enjoy the vast emmersiveness.

Only time this ever goes in my xbox is when a friend comes over and has never played 360 before, and they really want to try the new GTA.

If you are playing offline, assassins creed.
If you are playing online, well...there aren't many good xbox online games. I would spend my money on something you can play with friends and have a good time. Rock band is a good way to go, but if you must...I would say get a sports game. They never let me down, maybe it is because I am into that.

Mass effect seems good, Fifa 08 is by far one of my favorites, Oblivion is good pre-occupies alot of time..Bad company looked ok.

*EDIT* Simply because I re-read the OP.
Go for oblivion if you are looking for a storyline that will take you a long time. Creed and Oblivion can take awhile if you play the game right and do not decide to game for like 15 hours straight.

well w/e, when i get my 360 im buying guitar hero 4 first. (prolly buy 360 when GH4 comes out). tbh i really can't think of anything that good for a 360, much rather play games on my computer for some reason.

I played/finished assassin's creed on PC. I'm also not a fan of oblivion styled rpgs - the environment and setting I mean.

I really liked the new GTA, and I think it would appeal to more people. It dropped all the humor that characterized it, and is set to a really serious tone. Even, I would say it has an underlying message regarding delinquent immigrants and how we have a major role in their doing.

@Blackfox: before this generation I have owned every mainstream console. When this one came out I said I would never buy into it again and remained a PC gamer. 3 or so weeks ago I went to the store with a friend to buy his xbox and rockband, I loved it so much the game day I bought an xbox and gta iv. Over the ~3 weeks i've been enjoying it a lot, and even liking it more than PC gaming. So far i've bought gta4, rockband, forza, ace combat6, and mass effect.

I'm REALLY REALLY enjoying the whole xbox setup (marketplace, demos for virtually every game, extra free content) and i've fallen in love with ace combat 6 online play using my flight yoke.

And I hate guitar hero. After being spoiled by rockband you can never go to guitar hero and enjoy it - the proof is in guitar hero 4 being a rip off of rockband. Having a guitar and playing by yourself is not only boring, but you look like an idiot. With the multiplayer modes, playing with another person is retarded - when you own the game you naturally get better, and you become "that obnoxious guy" that makes no one want to play, simply because you're unbeatable. On the other hand, there's magic that happens when you get jamming with 3 other people (extra magic if you have more peopleand you rotate between drums, guitar, bass, mic, jagerbombs). Everyone enjoys it, and the greatness (yet akward when sober) of standing up and highfiving eachother after 5 starring a really hard song is unmatched by guitar hero.

I did not like mass effect at all, IDK what the whole hype was about it... It was a short game, repetitive, and not that fun IMO. Sure there is a bunch of classes you can play blah blah etc but BORINGGGG.

Gears of War was pretty good, I enjoyed the SP a lot. I'm sure Live is going to be rly fun

well Gears of War is good, they have already announced a second GoW to be released in the fall, might be a series to play i guess... i didn't really like the story too much, but the 2nd is going to fix all that apparently(hope so). and i only got hooked on the guitar hero series cause i don't have enough money to buy rockband.

Gears of War grinded my gears more than halo 3. Halo 3 was great when it first came out, but I cannot stand to play it anymore.

CoD4 is awesome for a little bit, but I cannot play that game too long. Face it, pick up an m16 and you destroy everything.

I have a ps3 as well, so I am waiting for socom.

actually, wait for the new star wars game. that will be a pretty interesting/fun game to play.

Get Mass Effect at BBV for $30

I like shooters of the console better.

err halo 3 i guess, i would have said assassain cred if u dint already have it

Shooters on a console requires skill, since no mouse is involved.

IDK If you can do this on the 360, put on the PS3 you can hook up a keyboard and mouse and use that.. seems pretty cheap to do but I also use it with the Linux I installed on my PS3

Hes got it.

I never really like GTA4, imo it was overhyped. It got boring for me, i didnt even finish the story.

I was =/ until I got to the second safe house, then a couple hours in. After that it gets interesting, and the last 1/4 of missions all seemed really epic and huge. I can't really think of any tiny ones, they were all of those huge missions that would make up only one or two spots in the previous games.

Yesterday I went to buy gears of war, but I ended up buying age of conan. I won a tiny bit of money with a lottery ticket today, so i'm going to go buy another game tomorrow - not sure which again =/ anyone have any non-shooter suggestions? I own the following

get rockband. If you have friends its a a great thing to do on those nights when you can't think of anything else to do. Chance are if your like me the only reason yoru sitting down at a console is because you couldn't think of anything else to do.

other than that i save my money for Quality games and everything else i rent cause i know im just going to get bored of it. Im waiting on Tim Schaffers new game and Too Human if you they don't fark it up.

I only got my xbox about a month ago, so I don't have any of the older games. I completely forgot about splinter cell, and saw it's dirty cheap. I'm feeling that i'll get splinter cell + gears of war tomorrow.
