IGN gave the game a 10...
2 10s given out in 2 months. now that is something.
i have NEVER played any of the metal gears, but from what i have heard of the story alone, let alone the graphics and gameplay, i want the ps3 for this reason alone.

Wouldn't say a masterpiece.
The ending of MGS3 was pretty damn good though.

Metal Gear Solid's story line is very complex, if you haven't played every other game in the series you have no hope of understanding it.

I expected no less from Hideo Kojima's epic finale.
I'm sure any fan will enjoy the story of Snake's final mission and anybody who's not a fan should hurry and jump in the bandwagon.
I own and completed all the MGS games up to part 3 ( still waiting for MGS4 ) and they are beyond value..
MGS 1 rocked my world and introduced me to the Hero of shadow moses for the first time.
Then the experience only got better and better with the sequels. And having David Hayter as a voice for Snake and Big Boss is perfect.
Good memories.

Yeah it's not like Mario, i mean wasn't the first MGS for PLayStation? I was a Nintendo-only player back then (not because i liked Nintendo only but because i used to think all consoles were the same, and i had enough with my N64).
Sure, it's one of the most popular games, but being a company-exclusive there's the chance for not reaching some of the gamers.
Fortunately, i already have a PS3 so i'll get this one just to see if it's as good as people and reviews say (looks awesome in videos though).

If I'm not mistaken there isn't an SNES version of the Metal Gear story. The first 2 games, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 basically come in between MGS 3 and MGS 1 and you don't exactly need to play the Metal Gear games to get into the MGS series because the plot of those 2 games is summarized throughout the other MGS games. I would recommend starting w/ MGS 1 and going up from there, especially since you could easily get the first 3 MGS games for ps2 for only 20 bucks or less.
Also added spoiler tags to the spoiler part people were quoting because what you described is a huge part of the story line not just some minute detail which is now ruined for me too

Just check wikipedia; it holds the storyline for the previous Metal Gear games, so you can get a decent overview of what happened. I'm waiting for the 20th so I can buy the bundle.

Don't worry, the guy is retarded and is making lies. That isn't what happens at the end of MGS 4, he's just being ignorant.

There was a version on NES, and IIRC one on SNES too. But they're irrevalent, they don't follow the story of the snake we know and love. So MGS1 on PS would be where to start - if you have a PSP i'd suggest putting MGS1/MGS2 on your psp.
