Fail game is fail but whatever here is the news:

NCsoft has teamed up with Gameforge to bring free-to-play Aion to the European servers. The change is scheduled to take place in February of 2012, and will not affect the NA servers. The new Aion free-to-play site is set up to answer all of players' immediate questions and concerns, featuring an extensive FAQ and an outline of the three account types that will be available.
You can check out the free-to-play trailer and find all of the details on the new Aion F2P site:

Aww was kinda hoping they were going for the same F2P model as in Lineage II. I got a Aion account scrambling somewhere though.

-Bots
-Spammers
-Grind
-No staff present
-Localization took forever
List goes on but those were the main points. The grind isn't a problem if you played Silkroad, but if you played WoW then uhh.. not being at the cap in 5minutes made everyone cry.
Find a EU copy for $5. Remain veteran forever. lol
Clever to pretty much force people into paying monthly or else you're stuck alone and buying crap off other people. Depends on how much monthly will cost though. If they stay at the uhh.. whatever they charge for EU I doubt it'll be any better. Half the price? I can see it going somewhere.

I played Aion for a fair while, since beta, and had a lot of hope that it would be the next MMO that I could immerse myself in. The biggest problem I had with AIon is that it didn't offer anything different: it was just the same as any other MMO. Sure, you could fly and that was pretty enjoyable. But they didn't take advantage enough of this mechanic; they limited flight to specific areas and, despite having wings, you couldn't use them as a mode of transportation between areas. It made no sense at all and was a missed opportunity. Not to mention that they really stuffed up flight combat, just another way they missed out on the feature that set them apart from the rest of the genre.
Back to the point of thinking inside the box though, frankly that's all they did. The classes were bland and generic: The Tank, the Plated DPS, Healer, Support Buffer/Healer crossed with DPS. Generic Mage, Sneak classes and a Summoning class. All of them were standard classes, with limited customisation, that offered no real alternative the competition. The story line was non-existent, the crafting system was pretty much as generic as always, quests were the same as most other MMO's and the only feature that made it stand out wasn't applied correctly. Thus, why AIon in my eyes flopped.
As for the F2P thing, I'm not surprised. I think a lot of MMO's will go that way with an emphasis being placed on micro-transactions such as vanity items, weapon skins, additional pets/mounts etc. There doesn't seem to be a huge disadvantage for using the Veteran system though, increased cooldowns on the instances do suck but we all have busy lives and usually can only do 1 run a day anyway especially when you consider how long it can take to form a party.

hm so basically the same reasons SRO failed -except less of a grindfest :/
Will be interesting to see how other new mmos like SWTOR and GW2 play out after a few months after release.

Yeah pretty much. It seemed very promising if they had fast localization and special updates. Oh yeah there were many lies said and the big one that I really remember is "We will try out best to have simultaneous release with Korea." Which has NEVER happened. 1.9 update was literally a few changes on the back of the game that took 5 months or something. The patch did include majority of the items of 2.0, but still that long? Get real. Then 2.0 took another 5 months.
Localization shouldn't take that long. Considering they go Korean -> English -> German/French is what was silly. Even then it shouldn't have taken more than 2 months. If just English a month tops. It's like they had only one person translating.
Oh yeah GMs didn't exist til merges happened. Even then it was dead. They shown up after 2.0 and by that I don't even mean in game, but more of shitty gm events. Top it off the first real event they had was like 8 months after release. The first event was accept this survey receive pumpkin hat.
Oh yeah and PvP turned to a shitty zergfest and ending in a split second depending what class vs class.

I do recall GMs being active when I was playing, just after launch and during beta, they were even banning bots transformed to a squirrel-esque character. I kinda liked the game, but I quit anyway since none of my friends liked it

Wow Aion failing? I remember how hyped up it was before it was released....These formulas that most of these MMORPG use is a joke and causing them fail....good...Its time for them to start offering better quality and meaningful content and cut back on the grind fest and lack luster community support.
