That's a long list , i never got fond of racing games but the most racing one that i really liked was "Need for speed:Most Wanted" .
Tried other car games but none got my interest ,
( i do agree that need for speed 2 , carbon aren't good though Most wanted is actually nice ) .

I don't think you'll find a noteworthy realistic game where you can upgrade your cars NFS like, but here are some you might want to try:

if you want to try more hardcoreish realism stuff:
-rfactor
-richard burns rally
graphics of both games are on ps2/xbox level and cover the real tracks/realism points.
Buying cars and upgrading them not that much, but as far as i am aware is that rfactor is highly moddable with a relatively large modding community you might find something buried there.
Be sure to get you driving wheel ready though ,i tested Richard burns rally and it was nearly unplayable without a wheel.

collin mcrae rally 2005 was also a very nice game, great balance between realism and accessibility, but again no buying+modifying cars but it got group b cars <3.

Race driver: Grid: was also pretty decent, might be worth a look
Formula 1 2010: again good balance between realism and accessibility, great graphics and great racing tracks (spa, monza, silverstone, monaco) but it's formula 1 you can tweak your car settings for hours to get the best performance if you like, but no visual upgrading.

There might be more but these are all i can think of right now.

Should expect the PS3 being sold for cheap considering online has been down for 3 weeks. A lot of people are impatient and don't care for what happened other than I want my online and I want it now.

If you ever planned on buying a PS3 now would be the chance.

Yeah , some hackers took every single info you provided to Sony ( in Ps3 online accounts to be more accurate ) , it was all stored in a notebook with no protection , guess they never supposed someone will bypass the hack shield and reach them .

Anyhow the credit cards are safe (luckily) .
