Global Strategy games?

So I am trying to think of the best way of describing what I am looking for. You know how there are games out there that involve fighting on an global level to dominate? I was walking through my hall earlier this month and I saw some guys playing a game that had a map of europe over it and it looked like they were supporting a certain country. I know this is really vague, but I have always been interested in playing a strategical game in which you are trying to dominate other countries/players.
I know Civilization V is very close to this description, but I know they were not playing that or any of the other civilization games. If anyone knows of any games like this, let me know. I will try to make this more concise and polished as even I know that it is extremely vague. Thanks guys.

Well the thing is even though they were playing a specific game, I am just looking for a game that fits this type of style. I remember years ago when I was playing BF2, a friend of mine told me about a FPS game that involved tanks only and it was played on a world-wide scale in which progress was shown as your "faction" won battles.
In this case I am looking for a game that has the same type of feel, strategy based, and can be played on a mac. Right now I am trying to find a way to get windows on my macbook pro so I can start playing any game and not have to feel like I have to limit my choices because mac computers typically do not get games as the same time as PCs.
Their game looked really basic, almost browser based. Honestly, I am in need of a game that is either strategy or mmorpg and is compatible with my mac. This game looked fun since there is a sense of progression and whatnot.

It's probably Defcon. I got a copy of it from someone in SRF.

It isn't Defcon. To be completely honest even though they were playing a specific game, I am just looking for a game that fits this type of description. I downloaded Defcon and it's good for what it is. After awhile it gets annoying just calling in nukes. I wish there was a way I could get Company of Heroes on this computer. That was a fun WW2 strategy game even though I sucked at it

Anyone know of other games like Defcon? I will keep playing it since it is satisfying me right now haha.
