Why did adventure games die?

It's been bothering me for a pretty long time now. they were the greatest type of games and then suddenly they vanished, how come? there are practicly no real adventure games anymore. one of my favorites is "the hobbit" it had good level design and nice gameplay, why would be let something as good as this die off just like that? inform me with your wisdom. even if you say that they are for little kids, you cant deny that they were fun.

Tomb Raider: Underworld ^^

Although it's quite action mixed, it still has a great adventure feeling all over it's face.

I guess that must be the common consensus.

I LOVED 2D adventure games, 3D ones had some brilliants, but alot of them were just like "wtf am I supposed to do?"

I wouldn't go as far as to say they've dissappeared though, more evolved into other things, such as RPG's and Action/Adventures.

And First Person Adventures :D

Judging by the games people have listed, I would assume you meant platformers as adventure games are still very much thriving.

The first three movies wern't bad, but they Ć’ucked up the 4th one.
And they took it too far when they made 'indiana jones' games.

The Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider series are still considered adventure games. Although they are more action/dungeon based these days.

yeah, i don't really count them as adventure games. PoP a little but more of a simple hack and slash. pop 3D I can count for sure as an adventure game, the newer ones are hack n slash.

I used to love playing adventure games as a kid. King's Quest series, Police Quest series, Space Quest series, Leisure Suit Larry... Then there were text-based adventure games like Multi-Dimensional Thief.

For King's Quest, there used to be a free remake of a couple of the games in the series at http://www.agdinteractive.com, but the site appears to be down right now. Maybe discontinued?

http://www.vintage-sierra.com has some information as well, but didn't find any downloads there.

One good thing about those games: no bots. Although that's mostly because they are not multi-player.
