
The Elyos inhabit the lower half of the world and because of this they were constantly bathed in light and got all happy and ghey. The Asomodians inhabit the upper half of the world where its alot darker so they went all Goth and grew claws and stuff. As you can see unlike most MMOs which feature a word on a completely horizontal plane Aion has a large vertical plane as well. The skies on both sides are filled with floating dungeons and castles that can only be accessed by flying to them, more on that later...
While PvE is important the main aspect of the game is on PvP. The game features a system of PvP lvling where you get points from killing your opponents, those point can be used to buy better gear and change your wings. While pvp are possible via randomly spawning rifts between the the two sides the main focus of PvP will take place on the Abyss.

This is one section of the Abyss. This was the only section open during the last Closed Beta (CBT3) and developers said there are 9 planned. If we take a closer look at each island...



We see that the two larger Islands, and they are quite large in game. Hold 5 fortresses and the smaller island in the middle holds 1. All fortresses are initially held by the Balur but as players enter the abysss they my challenge the Balaurs and if they defeat their fortress guardians they claim the place

So those are the guardians, each fortress has one, defeat them, claim fortress. The person or faction who deals the most damage gets the fortress but all those who participate get something like Abyss Points. The Abyss is also home to some of the more fruitful PvE areas in Aion and in order to access them you will have to be in control of the corresponding fortress. So basically owning a fortress is a very big deal and can get you alot of different bonuses. If you look at the maps you will see other notations on it besides the fortresses, those are artifacts and controlling them is important as well because different artifacts have different effects which can really change the battle from mass destruction to mass sleep. The Abyss is also only area where flying is possible whenever, where ever.
Flying plays an important role in Aion, You don't get your wings until Lvl 9 when you truly pick your class and get your wings. In Aion not all areas allow flight some being restricted completely others being vastly open except for the Abyss where flying is possible all over. Flying has a limit that regenerates when not in use so you can't fly constantly or as long as you want. Another thing about flying is access to aerial combat, attacking is both possible and encouraged during flight and it opens up a whole new dynamic to PvP and PvE.

Update 11/17/08
Ok so first of all the date for China's CBT and OBT have been announced, they are at the end of Nov and then January 1st respectively. This means that NA CBT/OBT will start somewhere between the end of January and the beginning of March! Its not yet clear whether NA is going to get a CBT at all really, the developers mentioned something about a Preview Event instead of an actual Beta but they might change their minds.
I also promised you guys more info on Classes so here we go.
When you first enter the game you will pick a school. The School of Priests, Mages, Scouts, and Warriors are your options. Once you get to lvl 9 in the game you get a special quest that gets you your wings. This quest also allows you to pick your official Class. Remember that if you want to watch a youtube video in better quality tack "&fmt=18" onto the end of the video url. Some of these videos will look much better that way.

Gladiators have access to the more kinds of weapons than any other class initially, including Polearm and the 2Handed Sword. Because of this the gladiator has many many skills to go along with this multitude of weapons. Being from the school of warriors they have good defense and good taking capabilities but their tanking isn't nearly as good as their counterparts, the templars. They will also deal consistent good damage but not higher than the damage dealing classes. These things make the Gladiator the most versatile and easy to uses classes in the game.

Templar

Templars have less weapon skills than Gladiators but they make up for it with their superior tanking stats and skills. In comparison its better to have a Templar with a S/S in your party than it is to have a Gladiator with a S/S if tanking is what you need them for. Templars are masters of drawing in damage and handling it effectively. They will deal moderate to low damage but will have more health than any other class. Templars are best when on the frontline of a fight and when they have both a sword and shield equipped.

The School of Mages
Sorcerer

Sorcerers are the main magic damage dealers in Aion. For weapons they use orbs and tomes though since tomes are books you can't use it as a melee weapon since it wouldn't make much sense. They have access to spells that control Air, Water, Fire, and Earth but they have very low defense. They are best when partnered up with a Warrior class to provide protection for them while they AoE nuke and cast devastating single target spells. They will deal constantly high damage and are best as range fighters.
