Honestly, the most recent big update fixed a lot of the major issues that were there when the game launched. If you were to get into D3 now, you'd probably really enjoy it.
Unfortunately, and I assume I'm not alone here in thinking this, the patch was too little too late. Those same glaring issues that were present at release took too long and killed the experience for a lot of people. From terrible monster affix combinations to shitty gear drops to a billion other things, it was a huge letdown after the amount of hype that this game generated.
The online only thing was also dumb. I have a decent internet connection, but it goes out from time and because of that, I couldn't just hop on D3 and play if my connection happened to be down.
I'm sure you'll hear mixed reviews and opinions about it, and like I said, if you're getting into it now you'll probably really enjoy it. The magic was lost for me though a couple weeks after release when shit was still messed up.
