Just buy it and patch. There are 3 games you need to buy if you want all of them. They are World of Warcraft, The Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King.

Depends. If you know a friend with the game, copy+paste their game folder onto something like an external hard drive and you have it automatically. If not, depends, trial or retail?
If trial, I hope you enjoy patching, but they may have the new streaming client up; but that only works for trials.
If actually getting the game, I'd suggest grabbing the Battlechest, because it's about the same if not cheaper then buying the original and Burning Crusade separately. Again, easier if you can copy+paste or borrow a friend's Lich King disc, otherwise patching might take a while.
You won't need to worry about Lich King until you're Lv55 at least.

BC is nice to have while low leveled though, because you can do your teens in the new starting areas, which are much much nicer, and you could be one of the new races if you wanted to be. *shrugs*

Can't you just torrent the first two and buy the last expansion or something?

Indeed. You need to upgrade your account online, which requires keys. The installing however, requires none.

Once insert the keys for your account, you are then entitled to download the installers from their site, which is what I did with WotLK. I also suggest getting the Battle Chest since it comes with 2 guide books, they are not really useful but it helps beginners with races, classes, and whatnot. For the same price and you get extra books, why not?

That could be a problem, as there's a few patches to catch up on... I mean, luckily the downloader is a torrent client, and it isn't the fastest at the best of times...

I remember having to download this 1.62GB patch pre WotLK but doesn't the WotLK CD has a updated installer?

I've always found most torrents slower than direct downloads.

Ya, LK has everything up to 3.0.1 on it. But that's assuming he buys or has access to the LK disc.

Slower then most torrents.
