I am getting a gaming mouse but have no idea which one to get. I was thinking the G9 but it looks oddly shaped. Anyone have suggestions?

I'm using a tiny laptop mouse! It sucks, but my desk it so squished with stuff it fits well xD. I also have to turn sensitivity up a lot!

i think they measure sensitivity or reponsiveness in dpi, basically anything over 2,000 dpi is good enough for even above average gamers

something over 6,000 isnt necessary unless you're a pro gamer who wants to be #1 in the world at fps and is lightning fast at everything.

Try the Razer Copperhead, its like the most common gaming mouse around and I can tell you from experience that it performs great. The software you get with it is ridiculous too.

Do _NOT_ get a wireless one! They're slower (though you won't notice that really) but the main problem is the batteries. The slow process where you begin to notice the batteries need to be fed again, where the mouse starts to perform less up to a point where you're pro gaming and your mouse dies on you and you have to wait till the damn batteries are charged again.

Anyways, I have an MX510, which is great.
I'd recommend you to get a mouse with extra buttons. For instance the MX510 has two buttons on the side that are easily accesible. Normally they function as Browser Backward & Browser Forward. This is great for browsing around but you can also bind functions to those buttons, Steady Scope from CoD4 for example. Or maybe a Flashgrenade, or push to talk.
It'll definitely increase the speed of certain actions where you're walking/talking/shooting at the same time and need to throw a nade or something.

So get one with more than 3 buttons (and a long warrenty, it'll take time to get used to your new mouse and if you're like me you might destroy your mouse in that process)

I'm going to go with the Microsoft Sidewinder, it has adjustable dpi and programmable thumb buttons. It also has a quickturn feature that spins your character 180 degrees for fps games.

People throw suggestions at you without explaining anything. You need to learn the difference between mice and make the decision on your own.

Generally, gaming mouse performance will get better with a newer mouse (and cost more), but even the oldest of proven gaming mouse is high performance. So what's important to know is not the DPI or polling rate, but the difference between optical, laser, and optical infared.

The first "laser" mice weren't laser at all, they were optical. You can easily tell if a mouse if optical because when you pick it up, it will have a red light under it - essentially that's to provide light for a camera to track. The next generation of mice were laser mice, which use no red light at all and when looking at the lense under the mouse, you'll notice it's pretty much parallel to the ground, and looks almost like a camera.

The difference between the two isn't something your mom or grandmother would notice, but if you're playing FPS at a competitive level, you'll learn to appreciate the subtleties. Briefly, laser mice are a lot more accurate than optical mice, but they cannot track as well when moving at high speeds.

There are two kinds of gamers and the laser/optical choice corresponds to the two groups. The first group is low sensitivity (players that use extremely low sensitivity and flick their mice to the target quickly): for these people they need optical because tracking at high speeds is infinitely more important than general precision. A lot of people think they are flickers, but they don't flick fast enough to need to use optical mice. But, for those people, the only viable choice is the razer death adder. It uses the same red light optical concept, but replaces the optical camera with an infared camera. It offers the same speed tracking as normal infared mice, but with a bit more precision.

For the most part, you will want to get a laser mouse. The G9, G5, and MX518 are solid and proven logitech laser mice, most people will feel more comfortable with these. The razer copperhead, lachesis, and even diamondback are razer's choice for laser mice - there's something to understand here though. Looking at it you wouldn't be able to tell, but when you pick one up you can definately feel that the logitech series are more traditional, they feel like normal mice but perform better - the razer ones are an acquired taste. You need to play with them for a while before getting used to them. They work just as well, and in my opinion look cooler, but be prepared to suck in game for a while until you get used to the mouse.

If you need an optical mouse, the razer death adder is your only option - but seeing how you don't know how gaming mice work, i'm sure you haven't developed bad habits and you should definately start on the laser gaming mice.

And a fun bit of information, when players get good, generally the low sens flickers are naturally talented to play snipers, and the med-high sens players usually fill in the other roles. You'll notice this when watching professional teams play, watch their mouse hand. But if you like sniping, that doesn't mean to buy an optical infared - the newer generation of competitive snipers don't have the flicking habits, and pull off good game play with a laser mouse.

I like to match my things, and my whole setup is black with blue LEDs - looks really matter for me so the decision made itself. If I were you, I would buy a G9 or if you can find a really cheap G5, that would be a good first gaming mouse. If you really want to go razer, because of the looks, I would get a lachesis - they're exactly like death adders but have a laser system instead of optical infared (and are ambidextrous).

edit: Oh, and as a side note, on the fly sensitivity is useless - it's just to sell units. No one changes sensitivity, you get used to one and you use it. And for the buttons, you can map them to what you want, but it's more novelty than anything. The only time i've found it useful is in COD4, I bounded my knife and quickswitch buttons to the mouse; since there are so many keys to map in that game, putting them on the keyboard would mean putting them somewhere out of quick reach.

in this case razor do offer the best mice for what you need, but i would also suggest spashing out to get a better mouse mat to make the most of what you just bought

I use a 10€ logitech optical mouse. It's good enough to kill anything anytime anywhere if you're used to playing with it.

Well I started this topic because my trackball was dieing and I need something to replace it. It fully died this morning and I plugged in a mouse. I can't use a mouse, I can barely click on stuff first try. I ended up just ordering another trackball.

Dom is the uber genius when it comes to mice and gaming. You will obviously get more kills playing at the by him suggested low sense settings. This will also convert you into a natural sniping talent.
All the other players can't snipe for shit and forfill other roles, that's because they don't use low sense mice.
God forbid the lowskillers using anti infrared camera mice with laser thingemies try moving their mouse fast, they will miss everything!

In most games you can change the sensitivity of your inscope crosshairs, and taking the time to switch and switch back could mean death - especially considering that if you need to set it slower and take your time to make a shot, that whole time you're an open target.
