Buying a wolf, new or used?

Well im lvl 21 and i got lucky enough to get a sos item on tibet, sold and now im not sure weather to buy a new wolf and lvl it up or buy an already near my lvl wolf. Which should i do? I heard they were a pain to lvl up if theres a big gap
