Extract Entire archive instead of Hex editing?

Hey I was just wondering if anyone has tried to extract the entire data.pk2 (or w/e other pk2 you might want to modify). It would be much easier to mod in the game if you could just drag and drop files, but I'm not sure if the game will still work if the .pk2 files are extracted into folders. If i sound totally crazy, i recently got re4 pc, and instead of editing the data files themselves, the modding community found out that the data files could be extracted into folders and that the game would still work. So I wondered if the same could be done with Silkroad.
