But if you use vista, please: NO Aero.
If you use XP : No themes, or not heavy ones
if you use antoher SO: You can´t play, so actually... that´s not a problem

In both cases, ctrl+alt+del, and kill process you know you can stop without problems or at least you`ll know wich programs consume more memory.

In hardware part, More RAM is the point (DDr2 1GB is around 30$) , a 128/256 video card should be enough =)

yes. make sure you have 1gb + of ddr2, not ddr1, ddr1 ram = human shit moulded into a pcb board, except a shit will have more speed than ddr1.

also, check the video cards clock frequency, for example, i run 2 8800gts cards (best on market xD), and 2 258mb ones are better than 2 512 ones. because they have a better clock speed.

I'm using A-Squared right now on deep scan, and only 1/4 of the way odne with 82 items, My hard drive was defragged much better than with Windows Defragger, and i'm going to try that firewall thing.

This guide is good for increasing computer performance but it doesn't make much a difference in gaming. Only a better graphics card will do that. As for Vista, a power hungry OS that requires atleast 2GB to smoothly run all the Aero effects, just simply disable all those good looking things if you are not worried about looks rather than performance.

ive downloaded JKdefrag like you said but:
windows has taken 2 hours for 40% de-frag should i let it finish then re-do it with JK?

there is way more needed then a good graphic card m8, especially for high fps you'll need a good processor aswell and 2gb ram or more will also help, especially for mmorpgs to reduce loading times.

to add a few things to this topic, i would recommend Ccleaner as listed but also ""defraggler'' also from the makers of Ccleaner, works perfect to. And as virus/spyware i would recommend AVG Antivirus ( antispyware included in version 8.x )
Firewall isnt really needed since most ppl these days have more PC's at home so also a router, and a router has already a built-in Firewall, you cant have enough protection though but if you got an old PC and you got an router, i would say get rid of that firewall, just scan weekly.

increasinig paging file also helps if you have low ram... not the best thing if you want speed but it help better than not having enough ram
