Starting an SRF server?

Post by Aristedis »

So, I theoretically have a PC and a connection that should be able to host a server just fine for.. lets say under 200 players.

I have a website that I made for a different game that I offer services on, but I was thinking of starting another one for a sro server, since I can never find one that really feels right to play.

Would anyone be interested in partnering up to make this happen? I have no idea what it takes to edit a server, I know how to get one up and running with SQL server and all that. I'd need someone with knowledge in that area.

What would you like to see in this server if we made it? My dream server has been a 80-90 cap ch/eu server with very minimal edits, maybe the inclusion of dungeons or something like that. But mostly a very very stock server. I'd like this to be as democratic as possible though, I'm open to any suggestions from our small, seemingly ever lasting community on SRF.

If people are interested I would definitely consider renting out a higher end server hosting service to make sure the game can handle higher population. But for a beta phase I think my pc could do the job just fine.

I wish I could help, but I have no idea about hosting, but I would join your serve playing few hours a week.

If you ever go through with this, I'd strongly recommend taking a very very close look at the job done by the WarriorsWay developers (viewtopic.php?f=45&t=136180&start=270).

The server has that oldschool vibe, yet there are lots of new quests to make things more exciting (and decrease the necessary SP farm to nearly 0). The rates are relatively low, which keeps the server interesting.

But most importantly; WarriorsWay is the ONLY server I keep coming back to because it's literally ALWAYS around. Even after 2 years, it's still here. And it'll be here in 2 years still, I'm confident. Because the developers don't need money for hosting, and they're genuinely just interested in hosting an awesome oldschool Silkroad server.

So yeah, I'd look closely at that. Although it's a TON of work to make so many changes.

I don't think I can help set it up, but if you do get it online I would join and donate to keep it running if there's other players around.

I'd be down for an srf server too.
But like Ltsune said, it's a LOT of work to create something nice.
However, if you need help in any way let me know.

It's been too long since I did any private server hosting/development so I probably couldn't help with much but I'm down for an SRF server.
