this class has so many useful abilities (80% chance of stun, heals itself) does it really need a sub class or would I be ok with lvl 10 warrior for shield bash and no other sub?

Indeed. IMO, as a warlock, you do decent with level 10 warrior and some bard sub. Works both for solo and party play

don't bash mobs while in parties though. Shield trash is useful in pvp against melee. Also helps cancel fatal skills like nukes, strong bow, maddening etc.
