Not that I know of, but armor and prot hav lower magical defense compared to garment.

Nope...There are only TWO things that can affect your balance (apart from cleric buffs bleh) That is your build (str/int or hybrid) and the int on your gear.

Garment - 20% Speed Boost. Higher Magical Defense.
Protector - 10% Speed Boost. High Magical/Physical Defense...well middle.
Armor - High Physical Defense.
Only the int/str on your gear can effect your build... although if you have no int/str on gear, you will suck!
