No, but hybrid is helpful.
Very helpful, keep around an 85% magical balance, try to get int / str blues on your equips.
get the HP boosting passive for heuksal every 10 levels, it's a must as well to boost your hp. I think it boosts around ~1 k hp at lvl 60 (assuming you got all of them).

Your mag damage will be a bit less, but the ability to tank and take hits from str characters and giants will give you a bigger chance of stunning them with soul spear (if you're a hybrid you probably will want to nuke first then when the player makes it over to you, start using spear skills).

ifyou go hyb. try to keep it closer to 90% to remain an effective damage dealer/

Well, with any int hybrid keeping a magical balance naked (it's important to note the naked part) between 82%~87% at least when you're a spear user (spear makes up for lost magical power). If you were to go s/s int hybrid keeping a 85%~90% magical balance naked works best.

A good int hybrid spear build would be the 1:7 ratio (70 levels of pure int, and 10 levels of pure str [that's 30 str added through stats]), which'll give you about a 87% magical balance naked, which works pretty well.

Also, with the magical balances you can go either way, but the lesser the magical balance becomes the more you'll be reliant on using your weapon skills than your nukes. It's just up to you whether you wan't more tanking, hp, and physical damage power at the expense of magical damage, or if you want more magical damage power at the expense of lesser hp, and better tanking ability (due to more hp).

But to answer your question, no spear users don't need to go hybrid, just being hybrid makes it easier since spear already has lesser defense than if you were to take s/s.
