cleric as second?

will havinga better cleric rod for my secondary skills as a warrior improve them or not? mainly talking about the def buff skill (i forget what it's called at the moment)

No, the quality of your rod will only affect healing spells, not buffs. And the only buffs that stays after switching back are:
Bless Spell
Holy Word/Holy Spell

Healing:
Recovery Division
Healing Cycle

Also, even if you have a good rod while casting Recovery Division/Healing Cycle, it goes back to default once you switch back to your warrior's weapon (unless you are a wiz/warlock).

so besides the res skill i should only get bless spell and holy word if i'm a warrior since the others will switch when i change weapon?

Yep. Recovery Division is also very useful in boss fights.
