A question on cold and fire skills

Would like to ask about specifically the cold and fire skills, Extreme Wall and Fire wall-Castle.
How do these two spells work? Do they simply just absorb 51%(Extreme Wall) and the maximum they can absorb up to is 4850 dmg?
I'm thinking of going pure int and using the defensives on cold magic to make up for low physical def. The absorb would really be powerful.
