Garment/Protect or Armour?

Yeh another question
I've got a 'pure' Glaive at the moment, mainly with Heus/Fire/Force. I tell people I'm using armour and they're all like 'why?'. But I don't understand what real difference it makes financially and how beneficial it is. If I use Garment that means I'm open to more physical attacks, more resistant to magical, but I also lose my phys reinforce and I spend less on MP potions, get a speed increase but spend a lot more on Hp potions.
Alright fair dos, but if I use Armour I lose magical defence, I'm more resistant to physical, get a phys reinforce, but I spend less on HP potions and instead more on MP potions. However, it just means there's a less chance of me dying.
It seems more favourable to use an Armour instead. If anything, at least a Protector set as it gives the best of both worlds, meaning I don't have to switch depending on the mob. So why do most people seem to be wearing Garments? Appears that Garment would be more effective for PvP, instead of PvE.
