wizzard best sub? hmm.... nothing is the best. It all depends on how u play ur wizzard.
i like bard for my sub. Why? because its noise and speed buff. You can hunt aggresive general mobs safely. you can run faster when mobs are casing you. And the only problem is, becareful if champ/giant spawns right beside u.... XD
warrior..... for its heavy armor? i need discount 20% mana consumption!! so what if u wear heavy armor? wanna tank? come on, dying too much for wizard is dispensable, it can lvl fast and also die fast..... fair enough, isn't it?
for your birds... i dont know..... i dont have one.....

WOOOOOOOOOO!!
WOOOOOOOOOO!!
There are two different playstyle, one is you are doing dual-weapon build, having both cleric+bard for example, so that you can attack using your cleric skills as well as bard attacking skills. The other one is only taking the useful buff to enhance your leveling and it doesn't matter whether you are a str, or even int character.
THERE IS NO NEED TO MAKE THE WHOLE SUBJECT TITLE IN CAPITALS.
I'd say bard. With Noise general monsters don't attack you. Party don't attack you too, only giants and champions. With Moving March you can run faster from giants and with Mana Cycle you can get your mana bar back to full in just a few seconds. These 3 skills all stay when you switch back to staff.
Also I don't see the point in healing yourself, 'cause with life control on (and you'll grind mostly with life control on) you'll always die in 1-2 or maybe 3 hits. You'll have to heal almost every hit then.. and with bard you don't, 'cause mobs won't attack you (except giants and champs, I know, but with Moving March running away shouldn't be a problem).
AFAIK does the bird change at the same level as the wolf does. If I'm not mistaken that's 40. It doesn't change a lot though, it only gets a few feather more on its tail. ^.^

Yarr!
Just to be more accurate on the bird, it grows on lvl 40. Its body is a little bigger, the wing span is longer, the crown on its head is longer, its face gets a little wilder looking, its 3rd foot is more visible, it has twice as many feathers on its tail. If I could find the picture, I'd show you the differences

From my experiences (pain stakingly farm up curse hearts to dislearn Cleric sub, then Warrior sub, then currently Cleric sub AGAIN!!!!), if you like party and want to support as well as nuke then Cleric. You have heal, bless (good for soloing giants as well as party crisis) and ress.
Bard is good purely for solo, because of march and noise but most of the time with wizard you'd level heaps faster in parties so Bard ain't that useful.
I'm planning to go Warlock since in PvP - Cleric ain't gonna save my butt since you die in 1-2 hits anyways, best form of defense is a good offence...therefore you're better off surviving by cursing/stun/sleeping the opponent before delivering the final blow.
It's entirely upto your play style I guess but imo - Wizards = delivering highest amount of damage output before you die. So might as well go Wizard/Warlock!
PS. Warrior sub for Armors suck because you become too slow/die to low level mages due to your magic def or lack of and 0% mana reduce consumption...

This question is repeated and answered / argued again and again and again.
Normally, I would direct you to a guide... but there isn't one for wizard
General consensus is bard: Moving March, Noise, Mana Cycle.
Perfect support for the wizard.
Wiz is plenty powerful... Warlock debuffs seem like a waste of time. Maybe useful for a giant (personally I'd use ice, then hit and run)
Others jobs? No. Just no.
