Me and my friend dislike cookie cutters, so we have been going against alot of the guides out there, ie doing quests while leveling, not sp farming at all, doing weird builts. [i'm fire lightning spear]
Yesterday, we had this discussion about how the bonus exp from doing quests will skew the balance of your exp/sp. We wonder how much it really effects you. But there are many uncertain formulas this game uses and ther factors going into it. Heres a list of things and questions off the top of my head:
Exp and sxp you get from white mob increases as you level up. So you get more sp per kill later.
Ratio between exp and sxp can be greater than, or less than 1, depending on the gap. So you could be getting more exp or more sxp per kill.
Ratio between exp and sxp as you level up with constant gap also raises. Compare to exp, you are getting less sp.
So as you level, both exp and sxp are going up, depending on your gap, you could be getting more exp or more sxp. But then the ratio between the 2 are raising as you level. At what point do you lose the ability to get more sxp than exp per kill? [I am not able to gather zero gap data at higher level, so will see if I can figure this out by interpolating]
But does it really matter which you get more?
What we know is exp needed per level and sxp needed to level each mastery/level.
What we dont have is amount of sp you need per level, since this varies from built to built. I'm going to calculate this for my own built.
Once I do this, I should be able to answer few questions atleast for my situtation:
Do I really need to farm sp ahead of time?
Does bonus exp from quest effect the balance so much that it becomes unreversable?
And how much sp I really need in the end?
With the data me and my friend collected so far and my preliminary calculation, the answer seems to be no, there is no permanent damage.
If you are interested in this research, it would be really helpful if you could help gather some data as well:
level, mastery, mob lv (or name), exp and sxp per kill with out party or ksing.
Also we noticed champion is exactly 2X and giant is 15X the normal exp/sxp.

Erm....
I'm kinda new to the game, started two days ago, and now my level is 12.
I have maxed out my masteries because I saw another guide that said i should. What should I do? Continue mastering each level, sp farm from now on or start a new character? I think I did something idiotic...

My problem is that, i'm new and halfway through level 13 as far as exp goes, i have about 230 skill points and i'm bored with farming already. I left my masteries at 9 after i hit that level and noticed the sp farming threads, and I get a sp about every 3 Bandit Archers (doing the quest to find those maps). Could I get away with a 3-level gap and be okay making a pure str fire glaive tank (using the guide in another thread)?

I never knew how to SP farm or any of this.... MAN! >_<
Should I remake the character? and start over and SP farm?
It depends. Do you WANT to SP farm? If not, don't start over. Not SP farming won't kill you.

alright, courtesy of a gamefaqs user, here is the GENERAL amount of SP you should have following this guide (note this person is only begining level 16):
Lv 5 - 24 SP
Lv 6 - 42 SP
Lv 7 - 77 SP
Lv 8 - 115 SP
Lv 9 - 191 SP
Lv 10 - 264 SP
Lv 11 - 312 SP
Lv 12 - 391 SP
Lv 13 - 590 SP
Lv 14 - 790 SP
Lv 15 - 1145 SP
Lv 16 - 1566 SP
I dont particularly approve SP farming from birth, but I do think a 4 lvl gap at the least at all times is necessary. Good luck and good patience :)

In need of clarification.
I've read the SP farming guide at least three times over but I'm unclear about what mastery level you should be at at certain levels.
To my understanding, according to the guide, character_level/mastery_level should be at the following:
Char 1/Mastery 0
Char 2/Mastery 0
Char 3/Mastery 0
Char 4/Mastery 0
Char 5/Mastery 0
Char 6/Mastery 0
Char 7/Mastery 0
Char 8/Mastery 0
Char 9/Mastery 0
Char 10/Mastery 5
Char 11/Mastery 5
Char 12/Mastery 5
Char 13/Mastery 5
Char 14/Mastery 6
Char 15/Mastery 6
Char 16/Mastery 9
Is this correct?
PS - I just hit level 15 and I have 1422 skill points following this guide. (to add to the post directly above this one)

Question: If I'm a level 16 archer with no mastery level, but willing to take it up to any level (up to 16 of course) is there any way at all that I could kill bandit archers in 1 hit without magic? See, I don't want to waste pots, and from my calculations, if I kill one bandit archer per 5 seconds (shouldn't be too hard, they spawn all over), I can get myself 30k SP within 24 hours, without any potions at all.
EDIT: Please note, I haven't made this character yet, I'm planning ahead of time. For example, if I went with pure str up to level 16, with the best bow I could get (SOS 16 +extra), would this give me what I want? The reason I want to use a bow is because with a weapon, I would have to move around, which would probably slow down my 5 second per bandit archer kill time.

I've followed your guide to the letter since Level 1.
I've just hit level 27 and I have a question about your guide.
So does this mean I should have an 8 level gap by the time I hit level 30? Or does it mean keep the 6 level gap until I hit level 30, and then make it a 7 level gap at level 31, and then finally an 8 level gap at level 32?
I've just hit level 27 and I have a question about your guide.
Now, the 6 level gap will change to an 8 level gap once you reach level 30. Why? There is a long lull at this point in which you won't be aquiring new skills within a mastery tree. Also, the total experience from mobs will be high enough to allow a decent gain of exps on a level 8 gap ratio while a 9 level gap ratio would be just too harsh still. Continue this 8 level gap ratio from level 30 to 36 or 37
So does this mean I should have an 8 level gap by the time I hit level 30? Or does it mean keep the 6 level gap until I hit level 30, and then make it a 7 level gap at level 31, and then finally an 8 level gap at level 32?

9 lvl gab
Why not just keep a 9 lvl gap all the time? isnt it easier?
and should it not give maximum skill points all the time?

Having a 9 level gap means you gain the least amount of experience points per kill. The smaller your level gap, the more experience points you gain, but the less amount of skill point experience you gain.

If I have understanded the guide correctly, you just have to stop lvl in your skills untill you have a 9 lvl gap or untill you think you get a fair amúnt of SP compared to your XP
