PURE INT: sword or spear

Post by AmongDeath »

Now, I made a thread on this before, however, many of the people who voted had no idea what they were talking about. I asked them to explain it, and there answer was "The damage is the same". WTF? Anyways, please don't vote unless YOU know what your talking about and can back it up with proof or a good logical explanation. Also, as b4 plz post why you voted that way. :D

spear does more damage, sword gives you extra defense + more of a change to get a crit or status effect.

sry for a bit off-topic.
does crit mean anything if you play an int char? my friend is lvl27 and his doing like 30-50 dmg or something like that on a withe mob with a simple hit. crit will only double this ammount of dmg if im right.
so any use of it? i see a hell lot 13-15 crit spears in stalls for insane ammounts of gold

A critical hit increases your physical damage but not your magical damage. So an INT char who does 40 physical and 200 magical might critical for 80 physical and 200 magical (240 normal, 280 crit). A STR char who crits will probably be the opposite, and crit for 400 physical and 40 magical (240 normal, 440 crit). The numbers I made up, but that's the general idea, so while crit is nice to have in any case, don't waste much on it for an INT char.

omg... i KNOW spear does more damage, and shield gives more defense.. who doesnt? You read my whole thing and STILL don't get what i'm asking >.<. I"M ASKING WHY SHOULD I GO WITH SPEAR, OR WHY IS SHOULD GO WITH SWORD+SHIELD. I know the benefits of each, but overall which one is better with pvp, pve, etc????

What's better: Chocolate or vanilla? :P

Do you want to do more damage or have better survivability? If you want someone to tell you how to play, fine. Use spears. Otherwise, you'll have to make your own decision based on the info above and elsewhere.

For a nuker, damage is everything. If you melee at all you'll probably be killed. So you can gamble on a shield saving you from being 1-shot 25-30% of the time, or you can use a spear and get a bigger nuke.

Keep in mind you won't have nukes until level ~30 or so, and you'll have to PvE 'till then. Unless you use cold, I wouldn't advise using a sword and shield. Imo, it's better to kill really quickly and pot through the damage than to sit there and hack away at them.

A sword + shield + cold can give you about 60% damage mitigation. However, swords kill more slowly. A shield alone will only give you about 30%. So if your kill rate with a sword and shield is 40% longer when compared to a glaive, you'll take 40% more damage. With cold, this will mean taking a bit more than 50% damage from the target compared with a glaive. Without cold, however, you'll take 5% more damage. These numbers are arbitrary, btw.

Unless you sit there and parse things and compare what the difference in kill time is between using a glaive, using a sword / shield, and using cold, you're not going to be able to see exactly what the difference is. Even then, what looks good on paper may not work in-game. A few nasty crits will place you face-first in the dirt.
