When should I start? Is it that crucial?

As soon as possible ^^
War/Warl costs quite a lots of SP, so some powerfarm at ong is recommended ( at least 200k to cap 80, or 300k for cap 90 )
If you really hate powerfarming, then gapping could work also, even though you may regret it later
