Screen Resolution

My Windows screen resolution is 1280x1024 and my SRO resolution is 1024x768. Having my SRO resolution on 1024x768 makes it smooth but when it's on 1280x1024 it's really slow. But when SRO is 1924x768, my normal screen is also 1024x768. Is there a way to have SRO on 1024x768 and have normal screen on 1280x1024? I have a 17 inch monitor, would a bigger monitor fix this?

1. what monitor is it?
2. do you change your resolution through the monitor or your computer?
3. it's better to have all resolutions the same so the computer doesn't have to constantly switch.

Monitor: BENQ FP71G X
I just go to my desktop, right click and then choose properties. Then click on the Settings tab and change it there. My largest is 1280x1024.
If I have my Windows resolution as the same as my SRO resolution, my Windows is massive. 1280x1024 is the best resolution of me. If I have my SRO on 1280x1024 it's really slow.

for 17 inch monitor i recommend using 1024x768, bigger will lag you.
EDIT: also, if you don't want to lag i recommend a better gfx card
