SLI stands for scalable link interface which is having two or more of the same graphics cards in your computer. You can't do this without two or more PCI-express slots on your motherboard (the number of slots should be equal or more to the number of graphics cards you are using). However, most motherboards come with one to two PCI-Express slots so I recommend you get up to two of the same graphics cards (lets call them GPU's). GPU's from NVIDIA or AMD both support dual GPU's, but since you are asking...

...about SLI, you should get a GeForce GPU. Models range from integrated graphics (possibly lower) to the new 9 series. As a NVIDIA user, I recommend the 8 series rather than the 9 series because: 1) the 9 series is new and many people don't have it so its hard to get a good opinion on it 2) I think only the 9600 GT has been released 3) it costs more than the 8600 GT (obviously) 4) the 8600 GT also runs DirectX 10 5) I got my 8600 GT for $80. If you want to use SLI you would need the same GPU. For...

example, a 8800 GTX with another 8800 GTX. A cool trick is to mix a 8800 GTX that has a frame buffer of 768 with the same GPU that has a 512 frame buffer. You can do this with most GPU's as long as its 8400 with 8400 or 7600 with 7600; you get the idea.

lol...a triple post, but for a good cause (might have to fix my sig) :banghead:
