Laptop won't start *Video Added*

Post by HOLLAstir »

I was on gamerenders just browsing the forums, then a blue screen came up and said something like windows is shutting down to protect something or to prevent something, Didn't read it quick enough. Well it ended up shutting down, so I started it back up. Brought me to the screen where it lists:
Safe mode
two other safe mode options
Last known good configuration
Start windows normally

So I just clicked start normally. The windows XP bar starts to load then all of a sudden it flashes to the blue screen with the white text for a second then it restarts my machine. I've tried safe mode and last known good configuration. Every time it starts to load, then brings me to the blue screen with white text very quickly then just restarts the machine. I'm at a loss at what to do. Anyone know what is happening or how to fix it?

When these kinds of problems come to me the first thing I try is running SpinRite and if it doesn't fix the problem, I do a repair installation of Windows, then do all of the Windows Updates and reinstall all of the 3rd party drivers (big pain in the ass).

I can't believe how many times SpinRite fixes these things. If you have some files that cannot be read properly anymore because of a few bad places on the hard drive, this may do the trick. It's $89 to buy it, but you can also find it on torrent sites.

But for the things it can't fix, you have few options except a repair installation. If you can find out exactly what error message you are getting, sometimes you can trace the problem back to a single file that can be replaced, but good luck with that!

Well the blue screen flashes so quickly I can't make out any of the text. Some guy who helps me fix my laptop when It's messed up said it sounded like I got a malicious code from a website. I'll run by what you suggested Pile and see what he thinks. He built my laptop, so I pretty much let him run the show. Thanks for the suggestions!

It's certainly possible, but this isn't the 1990s anymore... these days "malicious code" has much more important things to do than to kill your PC. They want your computer alive and well so they can use it for their own purposes like sending spam, collecting your personal info, hosting their phishing websites, all sorts of things.

Whatever it is, good luck.

Right-click My Computer icon, go to Properties

Click on the Advanced tab

Click on Settings under Startup and Recovery

Uncheck "Automatically restart".

The blue screen will remain on the screen allowing you to see what the offending device/driver/whatever may be causing the problem.

I wish I could do that. But everytime I click on any of the options it wants me to start windows with the windows XP bar starts to load then flashes the blue screen with text and restarts. I can't get to my desktop, it restarts before that appears. Maybe I could record it happening and post it or something so you see whats going on.

Can you boot it in safe mode?

Try doing that, while on SafeMode download HiJackThis, and get click "create a report" or "analyze" then post the report on here

How old is the computer? What are the specs? And what was the last file you downloaded?

There are many questions that need answering to determine the cause of a computer breakdown =[

You can't restore to a previous point in your computer, because you've been bluescreened and that wouldn't help at all.

Maybe this will help http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm? ... 647&page=8

Same thing happens when I boot in safe mode =/. It's about 3-4 years old. Specs not sure atm. Last file I downloaded I'm pretty sure it was a stock pack from a kid in my gfx crew on GR.

Had the same problem before, it was with a new PC I bought off ebay (teehee) so I just went ahead and reformatted.
Anyway, have you tryed popping in the XP cd and loading recovery console? First of all go into your bios and set first boot from cd-rom if it isn't already..
go to recovery console, type chkdsk /r... actually here, just follow the instructions, lol:

(I'd go with damaged filesystem.. but you could always try loading failsafe defaults in bios)

ps. if this helps I want a freaking cookie -.-

Put in xp disc and run the recovery, or if that don't work you might have to reinstall windows altogether. My computer did this not long ago. Try going into boot options and have it boot from cd drive with your windows disc in the drive. Helped me.

It sounds to me like a hardware problem, either RAM, motherboard or HD. Download some test software for that, and check your hardware. I recommend http://www.memtest86.com/ for memory (there's a free download there as well). Scandisk should help with the HD. Windows recovery may also do some good, as already suggested.
