SRO Windows 98 compatibility

Back when I started playing SRO in 2006, people told me to set the 3 or 4 executable files (the .exe files) in the Silkroad folder to use "Windows 98 compatibility". Do you all use that as well? Does it actually work better than just running it without compatibility mode?
I could try it myself, but I wanted to see what other people's experiences were.

He said Windows 98 in the windows compatibility mode, so i guess he has XP (or Vista) and i'm not sure what that mode would work for, maybe to make it work on Vista?... or, as Inuyasha said, make it lag less?, i'm not sure as i haven't tried but i think it wouldn't change anything (i don't know a lot about computers but i think people uses that mode when some software doesn't work well in a newer software, therefore they downgrade the OS -virtually, of course- to make it work).

Exactly. My computer is running Windows XP, my wife's laptop is Vista. Both are set to run the 3 or 4 different SRO executables in "windows 98 compatibility" mode. You can set it for compatibility mode of almost any Windows version at least down to windows 95.
Even on Linux, I have SRO running in WINE, configured for Windows 98 compatibility mode.
I guess if you guys haven't heard of that mode, or simply aren't using it, then you're all running it as native Windows XP or Vista.
I guess I'll just switch it to XP mode and see if it changes anything.
Edit: A while back, I reinstalled XP on my system. When I installed SRO, I mistakenly forgot to set SRO to Windows 98 compatibility, so it was set to just run as XP natively. (and here I thought I was using Win98 compatibility the whole time :p ) I'm still curious if Windows 98 compatibility makes any difference. I turned that feature on now, so we'll see... that is if I can ever log into Venice again. :/

I tried it again in Windows Vista. Uninstalled SRO, cleaned out the Windows Registry. Installed SRO Legend 3, let it update. I was able to log in once or twice, but after that, whenever I load the launcher and hit start, I get the ???? error.
Graphics drivers are up to date. I did the uninstall/registry clean/reinstall/update routine again, and same thing.
I'm going to try it again and see if I can work it out.

Well we are talking about Vista here. That OS is not exactly stable. It's working pretty good in Linux though
