laptop down the steps, cd drive question.
laptop down the steps, cd drive question.
My brother just tripped me in front of the stairs and my laptop went flying. down the stairs it tumbled, it is a inspiron 8200 and i need a new cd drive now ( that assholes paying for it) and want to know if there are any decent ones that will fit. i realize this should be in tech but no one goes in tech so. thanks for help, and now my comp is making noises, and a brown wire kinda sheet thing that looks like undeveloped film is hanging out under the CD drive. ****.

actually going to best buy isnt such a bad idea, go to geek squad and ask them to see what physical problems there are with the computer and they will find out for you for free. just to make sure u wouldnt be getting a new cd drive for a almost broken laptop

Re: laptop down the steps, cd drive question.
Is it still under warranty from Dell? or did you get it secondhand. If it's under warranty they will ship you a new CD-Drive. You can always try and re-seat the CD drive, it's one of the easier parts of a laptop to work with. If you flip it upside down, you should see a screw at the edge of the laptop by the CD tray, this is the locking screw. Unscrew that and then use the pull tab to pull the CD drive out. It's not necessary to pull it all the way out, then just push it back in, and rescrew the lock screw in. Here's Dell's page for doing it. The fall might have just loosened it. I've had that happen before.

Re: laptop down the steps, cd drive question.
Yea, your best bet would be contacting DELL in the first place. It was an ACCIDENTAL fall, remember. You are unaware of what caused it. If you aren't backed by a warranty. Best Buy or Circuit City. Geek Squad or FireDog (wow, circuit city just jocked Geek Squad, Gang fite!) and ask what's wrong. You know the CD drive is not working. Find out what the problem is and make sure it's nothing more serious than the CD drive. If it is just the CD drive, then your in luck, thats replacable. Hope nothin else is damaged.
