haha yeah, I keep Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop disabled (or at least firewalled from my WAN) on my XP systems. Sometimes I have my Linux systems set up with SSH and tunnel VNC through that for encrypted remote desktop help.

However, I'm usually the one providing the help, not getting it from others. It's nice to offer help to others.

Even on XP, I'd probably want to set up an SSH server in the OS to tunnel the RD connection through it.
