SRO freezes before login

hello everybody,
i originally had problems with the euro update because i was using the official ATI drivers, so when i clicked Start, a black box would show up and that's it. however, i downloaded some ATI Omega drivers (unofficial driver), but then it came up with a d3d9 application error, saying that i needed to download the DirectX SDK. soooo i did that, AND made sure my DirectX was the latest version (9.0c), and then it finally showed the splash screen for SRO after i pressed start and after GameGuard loaded. however, the splash screen stays there for a few seconds, and then it freezes. if i leave it long enough, it eventually goes to the login screen, but it's locked up and i can't do anything except ctrl+alt+del and end the application (not responding).
anybody got any ideas/suggestions? i'd appreciate them. thanks.
