To all the people getting the "???????????" error

If you're running Windows 2000 or higher, goto the SilkRoad folder on your computer and find the 4 EXE files there. Right click on each one and set compatibility mode to Win98/ME and try running the game as normal. There is no need to mess with the language settings on the computer. Please post only if after doing this for the error you still have problems.

Finally someone with a brain! Language stuff doesnt fix the error...
Yes I did this but it only prolongs the crash, and I also checked the 'disable visual themes', I am going to try without all this and see if its fixed.

Ok, I have fixed my problem, without of those stupid language changes or compatibility changes
- bug causing users to crash at Chinese Western Ferry fixed
Not sure if this helped the users with the problem not just in that area but in whole, because when that was announced I didnt crash but tis not the main reason why I think I stopped crashing.
I checked my firewall, and found that the sro_client was not in it, once I put it in everything stopped crashing, oh and I turned the sound off so Im going to turn it on and see if that is the problem if not then the firewall thing fixed it...

The Firewall thing wasnt the fix, sound card driver is the problem

when I turn all sounds off I do not experience any crashes but with sound on a crash occurs...

so for people who get this error sound card driver updates =)

Had the same problem when i went out through the gates of the first town.
Changed my texture quality settings in my graphics card software all to Quality (as opposed to High Performance) and its all better

I was getting the ???? error somewhat rarely, maybe once per play session. Sessions usually are 2-6 hours.
I did the compatibility on the exe's, and have not seen an error in a few days since I did it.
*just some more empirical data*

Just done that yesterday to no avail. The error continued.
Just to make known my system specs:
AMD64 3200+ (newcastle core 22000mhz)
1 GB Kingston DDR400 RAM (nanya chips)
Seagate SATA HD 80GB
Maxtor ATA HD40GB
ATI RADEON X1300 with latest drivers
So I doubt it to be anything hardware related. Probably some DX9 instructions that goes out of whack or some stupid memory leak somewhere.

I doubt its anything hardware related. Maybe it's just SRO having hidden bugs they technicians cant find..

I think this is a 50/50 problem, its probably both the client causing crash because of conflict or because of error in the code; Joymax is fixing these errors for sure, but the best way to not experience these errors is to do the following:
-
Update your computer with windowsupdate.microsoft.com
-
Update your Motherboard drivers
-
Update your Graphics Cards Drivers
-
Update your Audio Cards Drivers
Make sure you have nothing running in the background except your
Anti-Virus and
Firewall software and other software like your DSL routers...
Play around with your settings untill you find which settings work for you and make the crashes stop, (Audio On/Off, Screen Resolution, Graphical Settings).
I think thats pretty much it, if you dont run into problems and want to avoid these problems I suggest preventitve measures are your best solution.

Someone earlier up in the thread mentoned memory leaks. IM a programmer and SRO definetly has serious memory leak problems. Its most likely C++/DX and I dont know if they read this but every time you use the new or new[] keywords in c++ to allocate memory on the fly you ve to add a corresponding delete or delete[] else you get major memory leaks. Everytime I run silkroad and close it a good majority of the memory doesnt clear, you can check this by using cnrl alt del in winXP under the applications tab at the bottom theres something that says commit charge, thats your memory in use/memory available. Silkroad is definetly a memory leaker bigtime and alot o these error will be cause by that until the fix the client code and free the memory blocks they allocated haphazardly. Also the firewall issue is correct also. My irwall(aol safety and security ceneter did not have SRO_client allowed by default I had to add it. It only had silkroad.exe and silksender.exe.

Calmwind:
I'm a coder (not games though), too. Based on your know-how, any chance that the leaks can be 'intended'?
Let me put it clearly: They know that the leaks are there and plan to close them with a future snippet of code (like the major updates OR when the games is 'finished')?
I know that it would be pretty dumb... but no one knows what passes inside a coder's mind.

It is not likely that the leaks are intentional as in Let me just put a leak here to confuse and frustrate the heck out of a lot of people. However it is quite probable in fact an almost certainty that they know OF the memory leak problem; that is not to say they know where the leaks are in the code considering a game this size has over 10 million lines of code or will have. The most likely scenario is they dont believe its become enough of a hindrance to enough of the players to be high up on their priority list of bug fixes and or other problems and projects.
Im quite tired so youve just witnessed the longest run on sentence in history someone call guiness and be my witness please thanks, hope that helps, bye.
LOL

Same here. I haven't been able to log in for three days now. Most of the time I get disconnected because of server traffic, but when I get past that, I never get to the character selection screen, it just crashes.

I suspect it's something related with ATI cards. As far as i can tell everyone that as a ATI usualy has problems (i have one too).

Plenty of people like myself have nvidia cards and still get this error.

Still, it doesn't seem as common as with ati cards, could be mistaken though.

This is getting absurd. There i was playing, trying to kill a earth taoist, champion by the way, and BAM, i get the ???? error. Ok, 15min later i get back in, back to killing earth taoists, (this time it was mag taoists, but who's keeping track?) and i get a lag spike, die, get ressurected and BAM, the same error. I was only online for 8min and i get the same error again!? D*mn, what's wrong? I mean after an hour or 2 i wouldn't mind, but 8 minutes!? Even micro$oft fixes their errors (you always get new errors, but at least they are diferent).
I don't complain much about the lag, hey this is a free game, but those errors? Man, it's about time they get that fixed, or at least find the problem.
