Go to
http://www.guru3d.com and download the newest 3dMark (it is a rather large file, but well worth it). After installing it, run the demo's, and watch them for anomalies. This will tell you if your GPU is overheating, or if you have corrupted memory on the card itself.
You problem is a classic example of a bad graphics card.

I have an nVidia 7900GTO 512MB which is amazing, and it only costs ~$249.

That's a fine card.
Is the second test the one with the forest?
And no, I can't even run detailed shadows, I use circles. But I max everything else.

yes it was the forest one that it glitched on i find it kinda odd that it messed up on the least graphically intense one of them all

is that a 6800xt, I have one and it only gave artifacts twice and it was simply peoples arms stretching. I have a pci card dual fan blowing up on my card to keep it cooler, maybe try some extra cooling.
