Can't install Silkroad

I am running XP Pro on a new Centrino Dual Processor Winbook with 1 GB of ram. I recently downloaded Silkroad and saved it to my harddrive. During the installation process, the following message appeared:
"Cannot write to the registry. Installation aborted" or words with that meaning.
Four questions:
1) Why does the software write to the registry;
2) Why does XP Pro prevent writing to the registry?
3) Is it wise to let a game program write to my registry, even if I can create a workaround?
4) Is there a workaround?
