This has been tried and tested and has so far proved to be successful. This is no thanks to Joymax or any devs.
Step by step
1/ Download CleanUp from here and CCleaner from here and install
2/ Uninstall game
3/ Remove Silkroad folder from program files
4/ reboot into safe mode
5/ Run Cleanup, select options, select custom cleanup, check all detailed settings boxes except
Delete Favorites Places/Bookmarks and Reset Scores Of Standard Games.
Click OK and then CleanUp
6/ At the end of CleanUp you will need to reboot. Again into Safe mode.
7/ Open CCleaner and click issues and fix them until you no longer have issues.
8/ Reboot your machine back to normal Windows
9/ Install SRO and see what happens.
If you still get the ?????? error Continue.
1/ The 4 executables in the SRO folder right click on them and Click on Compatibility and
run them as Windows98/Windows ME
2/ Right click the SRO desktop icon and make sure it is running as Windows98/Windows ME
3/ Access the firewall and click on exceptions and make sure the 4 .exe are present. If not
Add them.
I hope it works for you.

To my knowledge, those links 'ARE' safe as i have used both of those programs before.
And the ????? error... well, it depends on what caused this to happen, cause usually my sro gives that error when i pk2 edit, from where you just need to place your backup of media.pk2 over the pk2 edited one.. So you might want to take note of that in your 'Guide'

You point is valid... this ????????? error sometimes occurs due to Driver issue ....
If its a driver issue, follow this up,
1. Update all drivers including sound and graphics.
2. Update DirectX to 9.0c.
3. Download any updates from Microsoft Update.
4. Check to make sure that your Windows resolution setting matches your Silkroad in-game resolution settings.
*To find the specific drivers needed for your system, go to the website of your motherboard manufacturer or the website of the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer: Dell, Compaq, Gateway, Lenovo, etc) and then find the "Downloads" section. Select your make/model/version, then you can find a list of driver that you need as well as a download link. You are not yet done however, as these drivers are probably out of date. Next, you need to take the name of driver (such as "SiS Accelerated AGP"), and google for the company name (Example: SiS). After finding the company website, you need to download the specific driver ("Accelerated AGP"). You will need to repeat this process for every single driver.
*In addition, many drivers will have specific installation steps and instructions. Ensure that you follow them.

We tried that fix truez without any luck. It was the first of several. That is when I tried this on several machines and have had good results from all. One of these machines was a brand new PC with all current drivers.
So to conclude, yes there have been driver faults, but if you have up to date drivers this fix works.
