When an Apprentice starts killing stuff he/she gets a blue icon in the top left corner of the screen. This "cumulated buff" collects points for every monster the Apprentice kills for 24 hours.
When the 24-hour countdown has ended the Apprentice should left-click the icon. This will share the points with the Guardian (leader of the Academy). The Apprentice will get 80% and the Guardian will get 20% of the points.
A new red icon now appears for both the Apprentice and the Guardian. This "accumulated buff" gives 10% more EXP for every kill and it lasts for as long as there are points left. The points are reduced by 10 for every kill. So the more points the Apprentice has collected with the blue buff, the longer the red EXP-buff lasts.
This is a continuing feature, so as soon as the blue buff is shared and becomes a red buff, a new blue buff appears and starts collecting points again.

If you for example collect 2000 points on the blue buff, when you click on it you will share the points with the guardian. You will get an exp buff that has 1600 points (80% of 2000) and the guardian will get an exp buff that has 400 points (20% of 2000). So you will both benefit from the buff, but you will get more points so your buff will last longer.
Hopefully that made it clearer.
