alright, this doesnt make sense to me at all. im lvl 32, im at 0% lvl 1 thief with no thief pts at all. im 96% lvl 1 merchant, and 0% lvl 1 hunter with 126 pts.
why can i not attack 1 star merchants? yet, sometimes when i do merchant runs, i get attacked by these lvl 40-50 thieves when i do 1 star trades? no matter how hard i try, i can't attack them. i get the message that i can't attack 1 stars.
why is that?

the only way a high level can attack u is by spawning his high level NPC thieves on you. This art is called "popping".
Go research.

A thief can only directly attack a trade if it is over 1 star, same with trader.

Not completely true. A thief can kill you if you aren't trading but forget to remove job suit

The Player thiefs aren't attacking you, the npc thiefs are attacking you. Npc thiefs attack in this order; Hunters,Traders,Jobless ppl, Thiefs. SO if a high lvl thief is right next to you, and his thiefs start attacking you, you can pretty much kiss your goods goodbye.

1* popping is really not fair to the lowbie who just starts out jobbing. But, that's what you were a victim of.
Check out this thread I started awhile back also:
