umm.... avatar?

I am new to this whole message boards thing, so i don't know how to put in an avatar 
I have picked out an avatar and there is a code under it, so I copied it and put it in the "upload avatar from URL" slot in my profile, but it does nothing...
Ps. I know this is not about SRO but i don't know who else to ask.
