does it even do anything? a lvl1merchant compared to a lvl5 merchant? do u make more profit? or just make u look more special?

I saw some female trader flags that had some extra flags sticking out of them and at the time I figured that indicated what level trader they were (there was someone with 2 protrusions and someone with 3). If that's not true than I have no idea.

nope, you can buy the 2-flag one from the Hotan NPC for 1 mil. it doesn't do anything extra compared to the 1-flag one other than look better. and there is no 3-flag trader flag.
