Untrue. I've been behind a trader by 2 or 3 horse lengths and my thiefs still attack the trader.
Popping is when you get your high level NPC thiefs, that you automatically spawn when you have loot, to attack a significantly lower level's transport. Since they are lower level they will be unable to kill your thief and eventually your thief will kill their transport and probably them.

zomg i was describing popping not "im so lucky that my thief still attacks him" in 90% of time ure transport is infront...

Not really. I prefer to hide in the trees on the side of the road (So that the trader doesn't see me and turn back.) and jump him as he passes. More often than not, when I come at him from the side he'll always be in front of me a little bit and yet I still always manage to pop him/her.
If you want to do some popping I suggest you try to hide in the trees until a trader comes by. Sometimes a higher level hunter may miss you if you aren't directly on the road.
Edit: And what is "zomg"?

i hate poppers, not the lvl 60s that pop lvl 60+ trader ( If you are still one staring that 60 i despise you) but the ones that are 60 and pop lvl 20s

I'm lvl 26 and I have pretty much given up on trying to do trade runs because of popping

Gets frustrating

Next triangular conflict update fixes 1* popping... or at least makes it harder to do because thiefs will spawn npc hunters that only thiefs can attack/be attacked by.
