Garment question

When I try to wear the garment hood, it equips fine but for some reason it does not appear on the character (so it looks like there is nothing on my head)... I think this is preventing me from getting the full set bonus - or is it normal for the head piece to not appear? This happens for 1st degree, 2nd degree, etc...

There are two different types of headpieces.
Hoods and hats.
Hoods don't show up on your character, while hat does.
As long as it is equipped you get the bonus and stats from it.

and it's the same for all armor types.
