It may make less sense on a forum to use abbreviations, and I won't admit to the degradation of our language, but quick words are useful in game. During a trade run for example, having some abbreviations can allow you to finish a sentence quicker so you can drop a thief behind you.
I doubt abbreviations were really made without the necessity to type more quickly.

This forum's language is great, even when the nubs speak. At least it's not as bad as Runescape. Curse Jagex and their non-existant care factor. At least here you can understand what (almost) everyone is trying to say, without getting the nubs who talk like this:
"OMGZZZLYK YER I WNT 2 DA SHOPZ TDAY N GOT A PK OF CONDOMS!!!!111111ONEONE'
