What are talismans and what are they used for?

I see many people selling talismans. What are they? what are they used for and what do you get from them?

With the latest update the Forgotten World was introduced. Now there are quests for that fow (thats how alot of people I know call it atleast) where you can get SoX items, to get these you have to collect 8 talismans.
