Losing an item when dying

Sometimes when I die a few times in a row i drop an item. My question is when do you exaclty start dropping items?

random...so you really can't tell...

It's random excepted the equiped weapon that can't be dropped nor silk items. You also drop more easily stuff when you have murder status.

I never dropped a weapon/items when I died, untill I borrowed a friend's xbow, then I lost it >_>

I dropped a very beautifull shield that was in my inventory (I had my wizzie staff equiped in the party). The pet of a bot picked it up.......
