Granting magic on avatar item

I tried search function and couldn't find anything.
I went to Donwhang's blacksmith to grant a stat on my red earth ghost helm, and it said I couldn't for some reason. I wanted the STR one, then I tried all of them and the same thing. Is there a special item I need? Thanks in advance.
